Executive Summary
Like in the first quarter, in the third quarter of 2014 the Committee to Protect Freedom of Expression (CPFE) detected attempts by different government agencies to restrict the freedom of expression, different forms of pressure against the media outlets and journalists.
Upon scrutiny of the state of freedom of speech and study of the environment where the media and journalists act, CPFE continued to report cases of violations of their rights. As compared with the third quarter of 2013, the total number of such facts decreased by 18 and 10 respectively over the third quarter of 2014. Nevertheless, the findings of this quarter are also worrying: in the third quarter of 2014 CPFE reported 2 cases of physical violence against journalists, 7 cases of pressure against the media and their staff, 1 case of infringement on the right to receive and impart information.
In the third quarter of 2014, lawsuits against journalists and the media for insult and defamation increased by 5. Besides, 1 summons was received for disclosure of the source of information.
